RAPID MAGNITUDE ESTIMATION USING τC METHOD FOR EARTHQUAKE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (CASE STUDY IN SUMATRA)
Abstract. Sumatra has three sources of earthquakes, these are subduction zone, Sumatra fault system and outer arc faults which are very closed to settlements so these pose serious threat to human lives also properties. Earthquake early warning system should be developed for mitigation. This study aims to developing earthquake early warning system by way of estimating the magnitude before the arrival of S waves. The magnitude is estimated from relationship between τc parameter and magnitude. Strong ground motion record were integrated twice to get the displacement record with high-pass Butterworth filter applied. τc was determined from ratio of displacement and velocity of vertical component record. τc reflects the size of an earthquake from initial portion of the P waves. τc method could generate magnitude estimation with 0.71 deviation value from actual size impending earthquake, with 0,5 of corner frequency and needed 21,1 second before the arrival of S waves. This method validated with the existing earthquake catalog
